+   Structure and Function of Skin

  • Skin
    • 2 primary layers
      • Epidermis
      • Dermis
    • Function of layers
  • What artificial skin must have to mimic real skin?
The skin is composed of two primary component; the dermis and the epidermis.

The Epidermis
  • is the is superficial layer
  • it is derived from embryonic ectoderm,
    • a layer of thin cell produce from the stratum basale.
  • Stratum basale
    • it is the layer beneath the epidermis
    • it is composed of protein fiber connections to the dermis layer
    • it has a texture of valley micro architecture of rete ridges
The Dermis

  • is the inner and thicker layer of the skin
  • it is further divided into two layer
    • papillary dermis
    • reticular dermis
  • composed of collagen, glycosaminoglycans, elastin, and matrix of proteins
  • it provides strength, elasticity, and tactile qualities
  • other components are within the skin
    • hair follicles
    • sweat glands
    • sebaceous gland
    • these components also help protect the skin as a barrier.
  • Both the Epidermis and Dermis function as
    • thermoregulation
    • microbial defense (mechanical barrier and immune defense)
    • desiccation barrier
    • mechanical defense and wound repair
    • cosmetic appearance, pigmentation, and contraction control.
The Artificial Skin must have 5 of these functions and two must be durability and elasticity.
