+ Structure and Function of Skin
- Skin
- 2 primary layers
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Function of layers
- What artificial skin must have to mimic real skin?
The Epidermis
- is the is superficial layer
- it is derived from embryonic ectoderm,
- a layer of thin cell produce from the stratum basale.
- Stratum basale
- it is the layer beneath the epidermis
- it is composed of protein fiber connections to the dermis layer
- it has a texture of valley micro architecture of rete ridges
- is the inner and thicker layer of the skin
- it is further divided into two layer
- papillary dermis
- reticular dermis
- composed of collagen, glycosaminoglycans, elastin, and matrix of proteins
- it provides strength, elasticity, and tactile qualities
- other components are within the skin
- hair follicles
- sweat glands
- sebaceous gland
- these components also help protect the skin as a barrier.
- Both the Epidermis and Dermis function as
- thermoregulation
- microbial defense (mechanical barrier and immune defense)
- desiccation barrier
- mechanical defense and wound repair
- cosmetic appearance, pigmentation, and contraction control.
